Acting Interior Ministry Secretary General Miroslav Rashkov told reporters here on Tuesday that a set of measures have been ordered across the country to prevent cases of violence committed by young people. The press briefing took place after a meeting between representatives of the Interior Ministry and the prosecution service.

Sofia District Prosecutor’s Office spokesperson Nikolay Nikolaev specified that the measures will target all forms of violence on the streets and not just crime originating from youth groups. He pointed out that a young person whose criminal record has convictions could have their future ruined.

Nikolaev appealed to parents to take measures, since the prosecution service would file charges against youths who commit violent acts.

Prosecutor Svetlana Dimitrova reported that alleged perpetrators of severe violent acts have been detained even though they are under 18. There have been five cases of such violence in the past week, all of which have resulted in charges.

Later Tuesday, the prosecution service reported that acting Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov ordered uncompromising action against hooliganism by youths in public places. Sarafov stated: "The public is right to be outraged by these acts of violence. The state is obliged to react immediately with concrete actions that will lead to the cessation of these cases. It is unacceptable to allow such outrages on the streets."
