Demography and demographic policy are a matter of national security, said Labour and Social Policy Minister Borislav Gutsanov, addressing a roundtable on “Demography - trends, problems and solutions", organized by him at the National Assembly.

Minister Gutsanov stressed that tackling demographic problems cannot be achieved by a single ministry, but must bring together the efforts of many institutions. He added that a number of areas affect the demographic picture in the country, such as education, health and others, which should improved.

If there is a cause that can unite the nation, it is tackling the demographic problem, Minister Gutsanov said.

Among the highlights of the discussion is a study by the Institute for Population and Human Research at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (IPHR - BAS), which includes measures to overcome the demographic crisis. The study contains data on the current trends in the country concerning fertility, mortality, population ageing,

The forum was attended by prof. Prof. Antoaneta Hristova - Director of the Institute of National Research - BAS, as well as the other participants in the study.

The discussion was attended by the chairs of the parliamentary committees on demographic policy, children and family - Hasan Ademov, and labour and social policy - Denitsa Sacheva. Also invited are MPs from the parliamentary committees on labour and social policy, demographic policy, children and family, health and youth and sports, representatives of the National Statistical Institute, the ministries of education and science, finance, health, the National Association of Municipalities in the Republic of Bulgaria, as well as a wide range of institutions, organizations and academics involved in the topic.
