Acting Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov issued a position on Monday, saying that the prosecution service will be uncompromising towards all persons found to be driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. His statement followed a Kyustendil District Court's Monday ruling to remand in custody a driver charged with intentionally causing death by driving while intoxicated and without a licence.

Sarafov instructed prosecutors to apply the gravest pre-trial measure - remand in custody, when it is established that a person has been driving under the influence, resulting in a deadly traffic accident.

Prosecutors are encouraged to classify drink and/or drug driving as a deliberate offence in order to establish a lasting jurisprudence that ensures the imposition of effective and fair penalties for offenders.
