The Council of Ministers adopted a decision Wednesday amending the Environment Programme 2021-2027. It will contribute to the implementation of the environmental policies supported by funding from the Programme.

In the Water and Wastewater Sector, investments in agglomerations between 5,000 and 10,000 inhabitants equivalent will be financed in line with Bulgaria's commitments under environmental legislation. So far, only agglomerations of more than 10 000 inhabitants equivalent were funded by the Programme.

In the Waste Sector, additional measures are included to optimize municipalities' waste management processes for the introduction of "pay as much as you dispose" scheme. From 2026, the waste collection charge should be based on the actual amount of waste generated by citizens and will provide incentives to separate recyclables and reduce mixed waste.

The Biodiversity Sector will support the integration of the ecosystem approach and the application of nature-friendly solutions in the conservation of Natura 2000 protected areas, setting specific targets and measures for 250 and 90 protected areas. It is planned to map and assess the status of ecosystems and ecosystem services as well as green infrastructure within the Natura 2000 network. The purchase and supply of motor vehicles to support the management and management activities of the three national parks Rila, Pirin and Central Balkan is allowed. It is also proposed to include educational and conservation activities to be carried out in the zoos.

Changes made in the air priority are related to the need to transpose the new Directive 2024/2881 on ambient air quality and cleaner air for Europe into Bulgarian legislation.
