"I would like to call on all parties and citizens to protect civic peace, because Europe and the world are going through an extremely dangerous period and any manifestation of violence and vandalism at this time, regardless of the occasion and the author, is an attack against Bulgaria," President Rumen Radev told journalists on Monday on the occasion of tension in front of the building of the European Commission representation in Sofia, where protesters threw red paint and firecrackers at the building on Saturday.
Bulgaria is a democracy, everyone has the right to an opinion and to protest, but the law is one for all, Radev added.
It should be understood very clearly that the concerns of a large part of Bulgarians about the introduction of the euro are real and they cannot be arrogantly ignored, Radev said. He noted that he had long insisted that there should be not just an information campaign, not just explaining the benefits and risks of the euro, but that there should be clear, real, concrete measures, i.e. that there should be bodies and mechanisms to guarantee the purchasing power of Bulgarian citizens. "So far, I do not see any, and inaction could bring this dispute to the street. It is the government and the parliament's turn to act," the President said.
