The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH) issued Monday a yellow code for significant precipitation in 14 regions of the country on Monday, including Pleven, Lovech, Gabrovo, Veliko Tarnovo, Sliven, Yambol, Burgas, Ruse, Targovishte, Razgrad, Silistra, Dobrich, Varna and Shumen.

The Road Infrastructure Agency (RIA) urged drivers to prepare their vehicles for winter conditions. The road agency recalled that forecasts indicate worsening weather and precipitation of rain and snow in Central Northern and Eastern Bulgaria.

The regional road departments are ready to take the necessary actions to treat the pavements in the high-mountainous regions and passes where there are prerequisites for icing, especially early in the morning when temperatures are lower, informed the RIA, noting that the goal is for preventive and then snow removal activities to begin as quickly as possible, starting with motorways, the busiest routes on the first-class and second-class road network and the passes providing connections between Northern and Southern Bulgaria.

Where necessary due to strong winds, snow drifts or poor visibility, traffic may be temporarily limited until the weather conditions improve and the road is cleaned, warned RIA. If necessary, it is possible to temporarily limit the movement of heavy trucks in certain areas so that snowplows can clear the route.

The National Institute of Meteorology forecast cold weather, snow in most regions, and rain in Southeastern Bulgaria, with moderate north-northeasterly wind. Snow cover will form and remain, most in Central Northern and Eastern Bulgaria, where precipitation will be more significant and conditions for blizzards and drifts in the Danubian Plain and Northeastern Bulgaria.

On Sunday, a yellow code was issued for nine regions due to heavy snowfall.
