Science, education and innovation will be key in the high-tech world of artificial intelligence, said BTA Deputy Director General Evgenia Drumeva as she opened a local conference held as part of BTA's Europe on Balkans: Cohesion Skills project in Burgas on Friday.
She recalled that the project was started on November 1 in Veliki Preslav and that it is the eighth joint project with European Union institutions since 2021, adding that with it BTA focuses on the European Union's cohesion policy in the field of knowledge, including science, education and innovation. Drumeva stated that this area is already key in today's high-tech world and will be even more important with artificial intelligence entering more and more to assist and not replace people.
She emphasised that Burgas has a lot to present in terms of successfully implemented European projects, citing the words of Yordanka Chobanova, Head of the European Commission Representation in Bulgaria, who had called Burgas "an emblem for cohesion policy". Drumeva praised Burgas for its library, which won the special audience award in the European Commission's Regiostars competition in the Europe Closer to Citizens category. She also noted another project from Burgas, which won a competition against 99 other proposals from 21 European countries, winning EU funding for its initiative to improve the urban environment and make it more adaptive in terms of climate change.
Drumeva also recalled that on this day in 2021, the BTA's National Press Club in Burgas was officially opened.
Through this initiative, BTA aims to raise public awareness and foster open dialogue about cohesion policy, local achievements, and the implementation of the EU's policy priorities. Between November 2024 and September 2025, BTA will host discussions at its press clubs in the following cities: Blagoevgrad, Burgas, Varna, Veliko Tarnovo, Vidin, Vratsa, Gabrovo, Dobrich, Kazanlak, Kardzhali, Kyustendil, Lovech, Montana, Pazardzhik, Pernik, Pleven, Razgrad, Ruse, Samokov, Svishtov, Sliven, Smolyan, Sofia, Stara Zagora, Troyan, Targovishte, Haskovo, Shumen, and Yambol. Cross-border conferences will be held in Belgrade, Bosilegrad, Bucharest, Edirne, Skopje, and Thessaloniki. The project builds on the Europe in the Balkans: A Common Future and Europe in Bulgaria: A Common Future projects, implemented by BTA in 2023 and 2024, respectively.
