Korneliya Ninova came out of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) headquarters here on Sunday to ask her supporters to calm down and thanked them for having come to show her support. Her address came after escalation of tension between her supporters and the police who was guarding the event.

She reported that she has submitted a proposal in the agenda of the National Council to urgently convene a congress on September 28, which would signal unity within the party as well as ascertain Ninova's resignation.

Ninova said that her resignation will not be completed, until the congress does not ascertain it. She addressed her supporters, saying: "Rest assured that whatever happens, we will register the party for elections with ballots of BSP people proposed by you, by the [BSP] structures in the country." Ninova then alleged that five or six people within the party are trying to "usurp" it before her resignation has been completed, which she would not allow to happen.

Ninova said: "How could unification of the left be achieved by excluding people from the BSP? This is an imitation of unification, division within the BSP." She added that once her resignation is confirmed, that would open the possibility for electing a new Chair of the party.
