The project for the construction of a city railway in Burgas, connecting the Central Railway Station with Burgas Airport, should be completed by the end of 2024, National Railway Infrastructure Company General Director Maria Genova said here on Thursday.

According to the technical project, the railway line will be about 11 kilometres long, with a travel time of 14 minutes between its two endpoints. The project includes several pedestrian overpasses and new stops at key locations in Burgas, as well as infrastructure that will guarantee the silent movement of the railways. The estimated cost of the construction is about BGN 103 million, with co-financing from Operational Programme Transport Connectivity 2021-2027.

According to Genova, the rail link can be constructed within 3-4 years and the actual implementation should be underway by 2025 at the latest. She noted that the project is included in Operational Programme Transport Connectivity, which allows expenditures to be registered until 2029.

Burgas Mayor Dimitar Nikolov expressed hope that the final phase of the project, which foresees funding from the European Union, will be reached as soon as possible. He also noted that a construction of an additional railway connection to Sunny Beach will be possible in the future.
