"We are proud and grateful for the feat of our ancestors, which led to the rescue of nearly 50,000 Bulgarian Jews, GERB leader Boyko Borissov wrote on Facebook on the occasion of the 81st anniversary of the rescue of the Bulgarian Jews.
"Today, when more than ever we need a lesson in patriotism, we remember the feat of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, politicians, public figures, intellectuals and ordinary citizens who did not allow their fellow Bulgarains to be sent to their deaths," Borissov noted.
He noted that the events of March 1943 echo in world memory to this day, reminding people that there is hope even in the darkest of moments, as long as unity is sought and found in the name of a higher cause.
"May God forgive the innocent victims of the Holocaust, among them 11,343 Jews from the territories of present-day Greece and North Macedonia, whose lives we Bulgarians could not protect," Borissov further said.
