The only path to peace and security in the Middle East is the two-state solution, establishing two separate states – Israel and Palestine, Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi told reporters at a joint briefing with Bulgarian counterpart Mariya Gabriel in Amman on Sunday. Gabriel is on an official visit to Jordan at Safadi’s invitation. Earlier in the day, the two held a tete-a-tete meeting, discussing the Aqaba process initiative, the situation in the Middle East, as well as topics of mutual interest in the fields of defence, economy, tourism and education.

Safadi said that he and Gabriel have discussed the humanitarian crisis caused by the conflict in the Gaza Strip. "We reaffirmed the position of the Kingdom [of Jordan] for an immediate ceasefire and also discussed the humanitarian crisis that is deepening and increasing the human suffering of the people of Gaza because of the lack of food, fuel, water," Safadi said. He pointed out that according to UN reports, there is famine in Gaza and therefore one of the highlights of his meeting with Gabiel was a coordinated effort on how to provide humanitarian assistance there.

In Safadi's words, as the conflict continues, tensions and casualties will rise. He warned that as this aggression continues on the eve of Ramadan, there is a danger of escalating tensions. "What is happening now is a humanitarian crime in every aspect [...] We ask our friends in the international community to take immediate action to end and stop this conflict," Safadi urged.

He pointed out that during his meeting with Gabriel, the resumption of the Aqaba Process initiative has been discussed and the political consultations will start in about two months.
