Members and sympathizers of the Vazrazhdane political party blocked the Port of Burgas - West on Sunday morning. The reason for the protest was a Constitutional Court decision which rejected the request of the political organization to hold a national referendum to preserve the Bulgarian lev.
Vazrazhdane also held a number of protests during the previous week as well.
Vazrazhdane states that the right of 604,000 Bulgarians to vote in the referendum has been revoked and "democracy has been destroyed".
In a press release to the media, the party stated that the rejection of a national currency is a rejection of national sovereignty. "If we lose the Bulgarian lev, we lose the freedom and sovereignty of Bulgaria, and the decisions for our country will be made in Brussels, Frankfurt or Berlin. If we lose the enterprises from the Mariska Basin, we lose our energy sovereignty. Without energy, there is no economy. They are slowly and consistently destroying our nuclear energy," commented Vazrazhdane.
The protest lasted for an hour.
