Customs officers at the Lesovo checkpoint on the border with Türkiye have seized 3.7 kg of undeclared gold items and EUR 40,000 during an inspection of a cargo van, the Customs Agency said Tuesday. The smuggled gold and currency, worth a total of BGN 352,916, were found in a fridge in the driver's cabin.

The vehicle with a foreign registration plate arrived at the Lesovo customs point on September 9, 2023. Its driver, S.D., was a Türkiye national. He presented documents showing that he was transporting car parts from Poland to Türkiye. In the customs control area, he stated that he had nothing else to declare.

During a thorough inspection, Customs Intelligence and Investigation officers found packages with euro banknotes and gold bars, coins, jewelry scrap hidden in the cabin fridge.

The gold and currency were seized and pre-trial proceedings were initiated.
