Some 30% of motorists in Sofia drive under the influence of intoxicants, the Head of Sofia's Traffic Police, Tencho Tenev, said at a hearing in the Sofia Municipal Council here on Thursday. Most of the offenders are young, 18 to 40 years old.

The hearing was held in relation to a traffic accident in Sofia where a former football player ran a red light at a large intersection in central Sofia late on Tuesday night, killing two young female pedestrians and injuring a taxi driver. The crash caused strong public outcry.

Over 110,000 speed violations have been registered in Sofia since the beginning of the year. A total of 178 drivers have been caught driving on drugs, while 298 have been caught drunk driving.

He said that traffic in the capital is very busy and the 15 night-time traffic police patrols cannot be everywhere, nor can the 5 patrols on the highways near the capital.

Since the beginning of 2022, road fatalities in Sofia are five fewer, compared to the same period in 2021, Tenev said.

He asked the Municipality of Sofia to provide funding to Sofia's Traffic Police for placing more stationary speed cameras on more boulevards.

Since the beginning of the year, the highest number of road accidents in Sofia occurred on the Sofia ring road (200), on Tsarigradsko Chaussee (103), and on Cherni Vrah Boulevard (51).

The most fatalities occurred on the Sofia ring road (11), on Tsarigradsko Chaussee (9), and on Cherni Vrah Boulevard (3), Tenev noted.
