Three new stations on Line 3 of Sofia's metro underground railway were officially opened on Friday at a ceremony attended by Sofia Mayor Vassil Terziev, Deputy Prime Minister Atanas Pekanov, Sofia Deputy Mayor for Transport Viktor Chaushev, Metropolitan CEO Nikolay Naydenov, and Metropolitan Board member Stoyan Bratoev.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Sofia Mayor Terziev said that four years after the project began, mayors and executive directors had changed, but its main goal had remained the same: continuity and the strategic development of Sofia’s metro system. “Few people realize how difficult it is to implement a project like this and how much teamwork and continuity it requires,” Terziev said. He added that the three new stations would give more than 45,000 Sofia residents the opportunity to travel more conveniently and in a more environmentally friendly way. The Mayor stressed that the project was the result of a collective effort and thanked everyone involved, including the previous municipal administration and those who had worked to resolve challenges under the current administration.
Deputy Prime Minister Atanas Pekanov said that connectivity and mobility are key to the development and progress of every country and society. “That is precisely why it is such an honour for me to be here today and to congratulate everyone involved in the construction of this project,” Pekanov said. He added that the National Recovery and Resilience Plan provided EUR 144 million in European funding for the project. While such an amount may sound abstract as a large figure, Pekanov said, it translates into tangible improvements in the daily lives of Sofia residents and Bulgarians. The Deputy PM highlighted that the extension adds three new metro stations and three kilometres of new metro line, connecting three neighbourhoods and allowing tens of thousands of people to commute to work faster, more efficiently and more conveniently each day. Pekanov congratulated Sofia Municipality and the management of Metropolitan and said that over the years, the Sofia Metro had established itself as one of Bulgaria’s most significant symbolic projects in Europe. He also voiced special thanks to engineer Stoyan Bratoev, a member of the Metropolitan Board of Directors, for his role in building the metro system.
The nearly three-kilometre extension includes the Georgi Asparuhov Stadium, Bessarabia, and Gen. Vladimir Vazov metro stations. The three stations feature modern, minimalist designs emphasizing movement and dynamism, while their architectural concepts are also linked to their respective locations. The Georgi Asparuhov Stadium station, for example, incorporates the colours of the iconic stadium and elements associated with Bulgarian football legend Georgi Asparuhov.
The extension of Line 3 from Hadzhi Dimitar station to the Levski residential district was financed under Bulgaria’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan. The investment amounts to BGN 282.32 million excluding VAT (EUR 144.3 million).
