Eight people injured in a nightclub fire in the Republic of North Macedonia have been admitted to Pirogov Emergency Hospital in Sofia, three of whom are under the age of 18, said Valentin Dimitrov, director of the hospital, during a briefing on Monday.
Among the injured, two girls and a boy are under 18, while the other five—four men and one woman—are between 22 and 25 years old. The oldest patient is 31.
Their condition is severe, with burns affecting their bodies, upper limbs, and faces, as well as injuries to both the upper and lower respiratory tracts, further complicating their recovery.
Dimitrov said that three of the injured have been intubated, while the condition of the others will be further assessed to determine their treatment plan. "Everything necessary will be done. The hospital has all the required resources," he added.
All patients were transported to Pirogov in severe thermal shock—a condition that is extremely serious for any organism. "No matter how quickly we react, these are the facts," Dimitrov said.
Blood donation centers in Sofia, Plovdiv, and Stara Zagora responded to the hospital's need for blood, but blood donors are always needed, and blood donation initiatives should not stop, he urged.
Dimitrov mentioned that meetings with the relatives of patients transferred from Kocani, North Macedonia, are also scheduled.
Another six of the injured have been admitted to the Naval Medical Academy in Varna and St. George Hospital in Plovdiv.
The fire, which broke out in a nightclub in Kocani, North Macedonia, has claimed 59 lives and left 155 others injured, said the country's Minister of Internal Affairs, Panche Toshkovski, during a press conference broadcast by MIA.
Bulgaria has committed to treating 14 of the injured.
