Bulgaria must talk about education at a much higher level, Blagoevgrad Regional Governor Georgi Dinev said at a local conference within BTA's Europe on Balkans: Cohesion Skills project. The conference took place at the BTA National Press Club here on Wednesday.
“When we want to attract foreign investors, when we want Bulgaria to be at the big table of the European Union, we must have some prepared personnel, and in order to have them, we must first educate them,” Dinev pointed out, adding that the employees must stay and apply what they have learned in Bulgaria.
According to him, Blagoevgrad is located in an exceptional geographical position, which to a large extent helps it develop as a town of education and science. He said that more thought should be given to its marketing as a university town.
Dinev added that one of the discussions at Wednesday's forum is dedicated to rapprochement, which he sees not only as rapprochement between the peoples of the European Union, but also between institutions. "These are institutions that contribute to having more educated people and people who can help Bulgaria stand where we all want to be - next to the European countries in the big European family," Dinev stressed.
He underscored that Bulgaria's accession to Schengen is another sign that the country wants to be part of the big European family. He also said that major European projects are being implemented in the region, adding that it is among the first places in terms of the number of completed projects.
Through the Europe on Balkans: Cohesion Skills project, BTA aims to raise public awareness and foster open dialogue about cohesion policy, local achievements, and the implementation of the EU's policy priorities. The project kicked off with a conference in Veliki Preslav in November 2024. Until September 2025, BTA will host discussions at its press clubs in the following cities: Blagoevgrad, Burgas, Varna, Veliko Tarnovo, Vidin, Vratsa, Gabrovo, Dobrich, Kazanlak, Kardzhali, Kyustendil, Lovech, Montana, Pazardzhik, Pernik, Pleven, Razgrad, Ruse, Samokov, Svishtov, Sliven, Smolyan, Sofia, Stara Zagora, Troyan, Targovishte, Haskovo, Shumen, and Yambol. Cross-border conferences will be held in Belgrade, Bosilegrad, Bucharest, Edirne, Skopje, and Thessaloniki. The project builds on the Europe in the Balkans: A Common Future and Europe in Bulgaria: A Common Future projects, implemented by BTA in 2023 and 2024, respectively.
