The value of EU funding for Sofia Region has increased from BGN 952 million to over BGN 1.4 billion in just one year, Goran Beremliyski, expert at the Sofia Regional Information Centre, said at a local conference within BTA's Europe on Balkans: Cohesion Skills project. The conference is taking place at the BTA National Press Club in Samokov on Monday.
He said the ratio between grant aid and own funding exceeds 56%. Between 2024 and February 5, 2025, the projects implemented in Samokov Municipality were worth nearly BGN 168 million. Botevgrad Municipality is second with nearly BGN 116 million.
The regional information centres have gained popularity in recent years, Beremliyski said. Sofia Region is the largest in the country with its 22 municipalities, in which on-site information days are held for future programme candidates. In addition to upcoming programme receptions, the regional information centres have also presented the implementation of programmes at municipal and regional levels.
Peripheral regions are unique to Sofia Region, said Beremliyski. In the previous programming period they had the opportunity to apply simultaneously under two EU programmes, Regions in Growth and Rural Development.
Samokov Municipality is the only municipality in Sofia Region with two local initiative groups, Beremliyski said. "Compared to the previous programming period, we have a significant increase in funding under the Rural Development Programme, due to the existence of local initiative groups," he noted. In the 2021-2027 programming period, the most significant projects are those under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, where over BGN 280 million have been provided for Sofia Region.
Sofia Region is also in third place in terms of the number of contracts concluded and the total value of projects after Sofia City Region and Blagoevgrad Region in the South-West Development Region.
