At the beginning of this week, the Regional Directorate of Border Police in Burgas launched a specialized maritime operation, the General Directorate of Border Police announced on Friday. Patrol boats conducted inspections of vessels in areas known for illegal migration and drug trafficking.

About 24 hours into the operation, on July 9, officers from the Border Police Department in Varna discovered a sack containing vacuum-sealed packets of dry plant material on the shoreline near the town of Byala. Drug tests confirmed the substance was cannabis. Following continued specialized actions involving border patrol vessels, the Special Tactical Actions Unit, and maritime surveillance systems, several more sacks with the same contents were found on the coast that day.

Operative intelligence indicated that the sacks of marijuana had been dumped at sea in this location to avoid detection on vessels during border police checks.

The total quantity of drugs seized is approximately 40 kilogrammes. A pre-trial investigation has been opened under the Penal Code. The case is being pursued under the supervision of the Varna District Prosecutor’s Office.
