The Bulgarian government announced Wednesday the adoption of a decision for the temporary introduction of border checks on the border with Romania and for the suspension of the functioning of border checkpoints on the Bulgarian-Romanian and Bulgarian-Greek borders.

The decision aims to ensure the implementation of the four-party declaration between Austria, Bulgaria, Hungary, and Romania, agreed on November 22, 2024, in Budapest, as well as the Council's decision regarding the setting of a date for the removal of checks on persons at the internal land borders between Bulgaria and Romania. Under the four-party declaration, in order to prevent potential security threats arising from changes in migration patterns, which may result as an immediate consequence of the lack of control at internal borders, border checks will continue to be carried out at the internal border crossing points with Romania for a period of six months starting from January 1, 2025, after which they will be suspended, the government press office explained.
