There is a busy truck traffic across the Ruse-Giurgiu bridge checkpoint on Friday. Around noon the line of trucks waiting to go across the Danube was 1 km long: from the roundabout at the bridge to the Ruse Free Zone.
More trucks are waiting in a buffer parking lot.
A Moldovan truck driver told BTA he had been waiting close to 24 to enter Bulgaria. "I loaded up in Ruse and I have already been waiting for some 17 hours to cross back. I think the bridge repair extends the wait by some five-six hours," he said.
On July 10, Bulgaria started a major overhaul of the Bulgarian section of the 70-year-old Danube Bridge, which is why the traffic is carried out in only one lane and Border Police officers regulate the traffic in the area of construction activities.
The checkpoint authorities said that 2,434 trucks have crossed in both directions, including 1,322 outbound and 1,112 inbound.
The traffic of cars is normal in the direction of Romania, and cars wait some 5 min to cross the bridge from Ruse Friday noon. Traffic is expected to intensify in the afternoon.
