Cohesion policy is an extremely powerful tool for equalising imbalances in Europe's regions, said Radoslav Rizov, Director General for European funds for Competitiveness at the Ministry of Innovation and Growth. Rizov took part in the regional Europe in the Balkans: A Common Future conference in Vidin on Tuesday.

"Cohesion policy is a bridge between regions, proven over the years to helps businesses and regions grow and develop, as well as to be more competitive and innovative", Rizov pointed out. He recalled that the Ministry manages several investments under the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP), as well the Enterprise and Innovation for Competitiveness Programme (EICP) and the Research, Innovation and Digitalisation for Smart Transformation Operational Programme.

A total of 27.1% of all submitted proposals under RRP and EICP are located in the North-West, North-Central or North-East region, said Rizov, adding that currently a project for the construction of an industrial park in Vidin region is in the final stage of evaluation, as part of a Ministry procedure including up to 10 projects with a budget worth more than BGN 210 million.

He also said that the Ministry, together with the Bulgarian Small and Medium Enterprise Promotion Agency, have created a special procedure to structure targeted measures for the northern regions in the country.

The BTA project Europe in the Balkans: A Common Future is supported by the European Commission. It aims to foster a better understanding of the role of cohesion policy in the Balkans; to raise awareness of projects funded by the EU through the Cohesion Funds; promote dialogue on the results of the projects at local level and boost civic participation in issues related to cohesion policy.
