The Rudozem-Xanthi border control checkpoint between Greece and Bulgaria is expected to be completed by the end of May 2024, EGNATIA ODOS Project Funding and Planning Director Petroula Mentizi said here on Tuesday. She was speaking at the 5th Bulgaria-Greece cross-border conference, held as part of BTA's project "Europe in the Balkans: A Common Future". The conference is held simultaneously in Thessaloniki and Blagoevgrad.

Mentizi presented the results of the EGNATIA ODOS project aimed at Improving cross-border accessibility. The section is located on the vertical axis Xanthi - Echinos - borders of Bulgaria and Greece, connecting the Egnatia motorway with the two countries' borders through a new crossing, Dimario-Rudozem. Eight kilometres of the section will be built in a mountainous area, with three tunnels and eight bridges planned, Mentizi explained.

She listed as key goals of the project: the completion of the vertical axis Xanthi - Rudozem - Smolyan - Plovdiv; the construction of a new border crossing at Xanthia-Rudozem; the improvement of connectivity in the border area; connection of the Egnatia motorway with Bulgaria's road network; upgrade of the connectivity by connecting the ports of Kavala, Alexandroupolis - Burgas, and the airports of Plovdiv, Kavala, Alexanandroupolis; and the creation of a new dynamic in the fields of tourism and trade in the two countries' regions for the improvement of the local popluation's quality of life.
