Nine young artists from Plovdiv and 9 from Timisoara will display their work in Plovdiv in an exhibition titled “Urban Mythology”, said the Art Today Association. The artists were selected for the ongoing residency program of Art Today, RE:CONNECT, which started in November 2022.

The Bulgarian participants visited Timisoara for 7 days last year to get to know the cultural world in the city and establish contacts with the other artists from the project. In the past months, they kept in touch online to prepare the exhibition.

The Romanian artists will be visiting Plovdiv July 24. During their stay they will collectively install their individual works in the gallery.

“The theme of the exchange, Urban Mythology, gives the artists an opportunity to contextualize their impressions of one of the two cities by creating a ‘visual mythologism’ with the methods of contemporary art. Mythology itself is a mediator between the individual and the collective perception of the world. It is a narrative that composes meaning and transforms intimate truths into universal principles that mirror the collective unconscious. The shared focus of the artists will create a field for a direct encounter with the mythological topos of the city, which will illustrate the connection between the two capitals of culture beyond the obvious specifics,” say the organizers of Art Today.

The exhibition will open on August 2 in the Plovdiv City Art Gallery and will be on until the end of the month with curator tours to be held on weekends.

The RE:CONNECT artists are Ilie Duta, Dorian Bolca, Mihai Toth, Mirela Cerbu, Andrei Bucovano, Bogdan Matei, Christian Graure Natalia Bica and Senziana Gheorghe, all of them of Romania, and Ivelina Ivanova, Tsvetelina Angelova, Tsvetomira Borisova, Osman Yuseinov, Yavor Kostadinov, Valko Chobanov, Mitch Brezunek, Harita Assoumani and Aron Roth of Bulgaria.

The project uses financial support from the National Culture Fund and Plovdiv Municipality.
