“What we are working on means that the descendants of Gotse Delchev will include in the Constitution the compatriots and heirs of Radev,” Prime Minister of the Republic of North Macedonia Dimitar Kovachevski said here on Thursday. He was commenting on the words of Bulgarian President Rumen Radev from earlier on Thursday that North Macedonia's leadership will be able to claim it is building a modern multi-ethnic society when it finds it in itself to include Bulgarians - the compatriots of revolutionary Gotse Delchev - in the Constitution.

Radev was reacting to a May 17 statement made by Kovachevski, who compared Sofia-Skopje relations to Moscow-Kyiv relations.

Asked by a journalist whether this comparison means that North Macedonia is abandoning the inclusion of Bulgarians in the Constitution, Kovachevski said that North Macedonia is not negotiating with Bulgaria, but with the European Union, and the constitutional changes are part of the negotiating framework with the EU. “This is something that has to happen because the citizens deserve to live in an EU member state,” Kovachevski pointed out, specifying that this issue is currently being worked on through the working group.
