The biggest ship ever built in Bulgaria, the 100,000-tonne tanker Khan Asparuh, was launched in Varna (on the Black Sea) on March 24, 1976. The launch ceremony was attended by the head of the State Council of the People's Republic of Bulgaria, Todor Zhivkov.

The Khan Asparuh was constructed at the Georgi Dimitrov Shipbuilding Plant in Varna under Project 606 of the Institute of Shipbuilding in the coastal city. Her chief designer was Eng. Tasho Popov. The cargo capacity of the tanker was equal to the cargo capacity of the entire Bulgarian fleet in 1961.

The tanker was part of the Bulgarian Maritime Fleet until December 3, 2003, when it was decommissioned and sold for cutting in India.

A model of the tanker can be seen as part of the museum collection of the Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy in Varna.
