On March 2, 1956, the National Committee of Historians in Bulgaria was established in Sofia. The decision to set up the Committee was taken at a National Conference of Historians in Bulgaria at the initiative of the Institute for Bulgarian History [now Institute for Historical Studies] at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The aim of the new structure was to expand the international relations of Bulgarian historians with foreign counterparts. 

The idea and the necessity of creating a national committee of historians arose after the X International Congress of Historians in Rome in 1955, in which Prof. Dimitar Kossev participated. He was elected Chairman of the Committee.

Here is what BTA reported on the establishment of the National Committee of Historians in Bulgaria:

A national conference of historians in Bulgaria was held in Sofia on March 2 at the initiative of the Institute for Bulgarian History at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

The conference was addressed by Prof. Dimitar Kossev, who reported on the work of the X International Congress of Historians, held in Rome in September 1955 .

All speakers at the conference underscored the need of establishing a National Committee of Historians in Bulgaria, which would help to strengthen and 
international relations of Bulgarian historians.

The delegates of the founding conference elected a National Committee of Historians in Bulgaria to be chaired by Prof. Kossev, with three deputy chairs: Prof. Hristo Hristov, Prof. Petar Georgiev, and Prof. Aleksandar Burmov. A six-member Bureau of the Committee was also elected. Patriarch Kiril was elected Committee member.
