On February 11 every year, countries around the world, including Bulgaria, mark the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. The day was introduced by a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly in 2015 to highlight the role of women and girls in the development of science, technology and innovation, as well as to achieve their full and equal access to and participation in science.

The 2025 edition marks the 10th anniversary of this day's celebration and the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, two significant milestones in the global effort to promote gender equality.

According to UN data, women typically receive smaller research grants than their male counterparts. They represent 33.3% of all researchers, but only 12% of members of national academies are women. Women represent only 28% of engineering graduates and 40% of computer science graduates.
