On February 7, 1940, BBC aired its first Bulgarian-language radio broadcast. The broadcasts continued through the years of the Cold War when BBC provides coverage of events around the world and in Bulgaria.

Among the Bulgarian editors was renown dissident writer Georgi Markov, who was killed in 1978.

After 1989 and the start of Bulgaria’s transition to democracy, a correspondent’s office was unveiled in Sofia.

On December 23, 2005, the last hour-long show in Bulgarian was aired.
