Parliament Adopts Rules
for Election of Members
of Central Election Commission
Sofia, February 21 (BTA) - Parliament on Thursday adopted the terms and procedure for the election of new members of the Central Election Commission. CEC's chair, deputy chairs and secretary will be elected by the National Assembly. The remaining 14 members will be appointed by a presidential decree.
Bulgarian non-governmental organizations may nominate CEC members within 12 days and MPs and parliamentary parties within 14 days of the adoption of the procedural rules. Candidates are required to hold a master's degree in one of the following: mathematics, computer studies, political sciences, and sociology. Parliament decided that nominees will be heard at an open-door meeting of the parliamentary legal affairs committees.
Under the adopted rules, the parliamentary parties will submit nominations for CEC chair, deputy chairs and secretary to the National Assembly. Parties and coalitions who have seats in the European Parliament but are not represented in the national legislature, may submit nominations to the President.
The term of the current Central Election Commission expires on March 20. RY/PP
