February 11 (BTA) - In a statement on Tuesday the
nationally representative employer organizations and trade
unions objected against attempts to manipulate the public
through campaigns for a referendum on the adoption of the euro.

The organizations said that the idea goes counter to Bulgaria's
EU accession treaty under which the country is obliged to join
the ERM II and adopt the euro.

The amendments to article 29 of the Bulgarian National Bank Act,
requested by the European Central Bank in the course of the
negotiations, eliminated the last legal obstacle to Bulgaria's
entry to ERM II and the eurozone.

At the same time they support fully the decision of the National
Assembly which mandated the government to remove the country
from the ERM II mechanism if a different exchange rate between
the lev and the euro is proposed.

The business and trade union organizations are ready to
participate in the negotiations on Bulgaria's accession to ERM
II and the eurozone so that information is delivered promptly
and accurately to the citizens that they represent.

Last week Vesselin Mareshki, leader of the parliamentary Volya
party and Kostadin Kostadinov of the extra parliamentary
Vazrazhdane party called for a referendum on the adoption of the
euro citing a survey which shows that 58 per cent of Bulgarians
are against Bulgaria's entry to the eurozone. RI/PP
