An official opening ceremony for the 46th consultative meeting of the Antarctic Treaty took place in Kochi, India, the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute said. Fifty-six signatories are taking part, of which 29 have a permanent consultative status including Bulgaria.
On the agenda of the meeting between May 20 and 30 are matters related to the ecology of the continent and the bids of Canada and Belarus for a permanent consultative status under the Treaty.
Unofficially at issue is a report from Russia about the discovery of large oil deposits in Weddell Sea, whose territory is claimed by the UK, Argentina and Chile but the claims are frozen under the Treaty.
The head of the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute, Prof Christo Pimpirev, and the Deputy Director of the National Polar Research Centre, Dragomir Mateev, will attend the 46th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting in Kochi, India. To be discussed there from May 20 to 30 are international legal, ecological, scientific, and tourist matters related to the management of Antarctica, the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute reported Saturday.
The delegation includes the head of the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute, Prof Christo Pimpirev, Deputy Director of the National Polar Research Centre, Dragomir Mateev, Tsveti Romanska and Sasha Raycheva from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
