Affected by Crisis

Sofia, April 24 (BTA) - According to data by the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria (CITUB), 91 medium and large enterprises have been affected by the crisis so far. They employ over 47,300 people, shows a survey conducted by CITUB across the country about the social tension in companies and establishments and the pandemic's effect. A total of 114 companies are covered by the poll, CITUB said in a press release Friday.

In 78 per cent of the companies, the staff is taking paid leave of absence, in 26 per cent it is unpaid, while 13 per cent of enterprises are in the process of laying off employees or planning such a move.

The highest number of impacted employees are in the cities of Kazanluk, Blagoevgrad, Dobrich and Stara Zagora.

CITUB's experts have monitored the situation in detail across 68 companies, organizations and budgetary institutions with trade union structures. In four of them, or 6 per cent, the staff has moved to a four-hour work day. Ten companies, or 15 per cent of all, are applying for the 60/40 state job retention scheme. Ten per cent or seven companies have partially or fully placed their staff on an unpaid leave of absence.

Two companies are letting staff go due to them having reached retirement age or are not renewing expiring temporary labour contracts. Fifty-one of the monitored companies, or 76 per cent, are making their employees take their paid annual vacation. Four companies (6 per cent) have started lay-offs. Two of the companies will take advantage of Article 267 of the Labour Code.

The total percentages exceed 100 because a single company could be taking more than one measure. RI/MY/ДЛ/
