During a meeting of the European Union's Agriculture and Fisheries Council, which took place on Tuesday in Brussels, Deputy Agriculture Minister Georgi Sabev stressed that the issue of the competitiveness of farmers in the European Union is more important today than ever. "Beyond financial support for farmers, it is imperative to find a sustainable solution for their long-term competitiveness and survival," Sabev said.

"While it is good news that the Black Sea Grain Initiative has been extended by two months, this is only a temporary solution that may disappear in the heat of this year's campaign. Europe-wide solutions such as guarantee funds and schemes need to be activated to help countries that need to import products from Ukraine and the EU. Another solution is to support the rapid construction of storage facilities and export infrastructure," he added.

According to the Bulgarian Deputy Agriculture Minister, to prevent severe disruptions in the agricultural market for the sectors with the highest raw material costs and difficulties in sales, support needs to be provided. There is a clear trend of market difficulties in milk, dairy products, honey, and other livestock subsectors.

"In view of the difficult situation in the sector caused by the war in Ukraine, we call for an amendment of the Temporary Crisis and Transition Framework to support the economy," explained Georgi Sabev. He pointed out that under the current terms of the Framework, the statutory ceiling does not allow larger farms in the sector to be adequately compensated for the increased costs of growing crops and livestock, which will put them at a disadvantage compared to other farms.
