Bulgaria Ranks 42nd in Fraser Institute's Economic Freedom Report

Sofia, September 14 (BTA) - Canada's Fraser Institute ranked Bulgaria 42nd out of 157 countries and territories in its Economic Freedom of the World 2015 annual report, the Institute for Market Economics said Monday. Last year Bulgaria ranked 39th.

The report measures the economic freedom (levels of personal choice , ability to enter markets, security of privately owned property , rule of law, etc.) by analysing the policies and institutions of 157 countries and territories. This year's report is based on 2013 statistics - the most recent year of available data.

Bulgaria's economic freedom score is 7.33 out of 10 points - the same score as the one of the Czech Republic, Jamaica and Sweden. This score places Bulgaria 15th in the EU for economic freedom.

Bulgaria's best achievements are the flat tax and the access to sound money, and its weaknesses - the relatively high levels of state transfers and subsidies, and the inefficiency of the judicial system. Of all 42 indicators, Bulgaria has the lowest score for a consecutive year in judicial independence, 2.2 out of 10 points.
