National Council of Bulgarian Socialist Party Approves Draft Documents in Run-up to Congress

Sofia, April 24 (BTA) - The left-wing opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) held a national council on Sunday and approved the draft documents to be discussed and adopted at the BSP congress on May 7 and 8 in Sofia, which is to also elect a leader of the party.

In the draft of BSP's political platform, entitled "For Bulgaria: A Sovereign, Fair and Enlightened Country," the Socialists voice their concern for the future of this country. The document says that the changes in the world in the past 25 years have sharpened to the extreme the inequalities, have created many military conflicts and caused a global financial, economic, social and political crisis.

Bulgaria is at a critical and pivotal junction, and is threatened by a demographic collapse, disintegration, social polarization and cultural degradation, the BSP says in the platform, noting that democracy in this country is in decline.

The document further states that a process to destroy the idea of statehood is underway in Bulgaria. Bulgaria has lost its sense of direction and statehood is compromised, the Socialists say.

The BSP is faced with the responsibility to be a categorical leftist alternative, the platform reads, saying that the party is a national formation that champions the national interests and works for the unity of the nation.

The BSP draws the attention to the fact that large masses of immigrants may destabilize this country while the incumbents allow its being involved in the military confrontation between NATO and Russia.

The BSP describes as failure the incumbents' policy in respect of internal security and defence. The party also says that as a result of ill-advised reforms in the Interior Ministry and the defence system, a critical threshold has been reached below which the two are unable to fulfil their basic functions.

The BSP urges for Bulgaria to become an equal member of the EU, by formulating and defending its interests in the Union. The party's platform says that Bulgaria should not allow whereby its territory be used as a place to increase the confrontation between NATO and Russia. The Socialists urge for renouncing the policy of division and opposition between the EU and Russia, arguing that as a member of the EU and NATO Bulgaria must spell out and defend its national interests and pursue an active national policy.
