Border Police Officers Find 56 Illegal Immigrants Attempting to Enter Bulgaria on Train from Turkey

Sofia, September 30 (BTA) - Border police officers have found in the early hours of Friday some 56 illegal migrants, who attempted to enter Bulgaria on a freight train from Turkey, the Border Police said in a press release.

The train arrived at the Kapitan Andreevo border checkpoint at 1:50 am from Turkey. According to the train's papers, the freight cars were supposed to be empty. The police officers, however, found 56 illegal immigrants in one of the cars, consisting of men, women and children.

According to preliminary information, the immigrants had cut the rail car's cover, gaining access to it. Sixteen of them had Syrian passports, while the other 40 had no papers. Thirty of them claimed to be from Syria and the other ten - from Iraq. The adult illegal immigrants have been detained, while the children have been placed in a specialized facility, the press release said.
