GERB Wants BSP, MRF to Account for Support for European Parliament Resolution on Migration

Sofia, October 28 (BTA) - GERB's parliamentary group insists that the MEPs of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) and the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) explain why they backed a European Parliament resolution which, according to GERB, encourages migration.

Galya Zaharieva MP of GERB told journalists on Friday that her group was still analysing the information about the Resolution on human rights and migration in third countries, adopted by the European Parliament on October 25.

Zaharieva said the document draws attention to the need "to avoid creating separate districts for migrants, by promoting inclusion and the opportunity to take up all the social opportunities on offer"; and "considers that migration is recognised globally as being a powerful tool for sustainable and inclusive development." Based on these statements, the MP drew the conclusion that the resolution claims that migration is beneficial.

Speaking to journalists, BSP-Left Bulgaria floor leader Kornelia Ninova said: "We distance ourselves from the content of the resolution and the vote on it because it is not consistent with the BSP's policies."

The BSP has asked its MEPs to explain at an Executive Bureau meeting next week why they backed a European Parliament resolution encouraging migration, Ninova said.
