Bulgaria Regards US Air Strikes in Syria as Part of Efforts to Address Chemical Weapons Issue - Foreign Ministry
Sofia, April 8 (BTA) - "In response to the chemical attack in Syria on April 4, 2017, on April 7 the US launched a limited missile strike on Shayrat Airfield in Syria. In this connection, on the same date the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini issued a declaration on behalf of the EU reiterating our consistent common policy on the conflict in Syria," the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry said in a position published on its Internet site on Saturday.
"Further to the position expressed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on April 6, we emphasize that Bulgaria regards the air strikes of the US Air Force on a Syrian Air Force airfield as part of the efforts to resolve the problem with chemical weapons in Syria, the use of which categorically must be discontinued. We reiterate the need to identify and punish as soon as possible those responsible for the barbaric act perpetrated in the town of Khan Sheikhoun on April 4, 2017," the position reads.
"Bulgaria supports all international efforts aimed at achieving peace and reaching a political solution in Syria. Unconditional and full support on the part of the international community is needed for the intra-Syrian talks under UN auspices for the purpose of holding effective political negotiations in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2254 and the 2012 Geneva Communique," the Ministry said.
