Of Bulgarian Jews
Sofia, March 7 (BTA) - An exhibition titled "75 years from the salvation of Bulgarian Jews" will show unique manuscripts and editions in Sofia. The event will be unveiled Wednesday at Sofia City Library. On the sidelines of the exhibition, a meeting will be held with the noted researcher of the fate of Jews during World War II, Samuel Arditi, the library said. It has co-organized the event with the Bulgarian-Jewish Research Institute.
The exhibition includes part of Dragomir Zagorski's collection of valuable letters and documents of noted Bulgarian Jewish families from the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century who laid the foundations of this country's industrial development. The collection has received many awards at exhibitions in the United States and Israel.
It also shows unique manuscripts of Exarch Stephen that have not been seen in Bulgaria so far.
Exarch Stephan was of the most active figures in the movement against the deportation of Bulgarian Jews to the Nazi death camps.
The manuscripts come from the private collection of Georgi Mundev - the original "Commemorative Album"(private archives), and valuable books from the personal library of Arditi.
Sofia City Library will exhibit rare editions from its fund with opinions of Bulgarian statesmen, scholars, and cultural figures including Alexander Malinov, Atanas Bourov, Andrei Lyapchev, Nikola Moushanov, Prof. Asseb Zlatarev, Elin Pelin and Krustyu Sarafov, as well as a miscellany dedicated to Bulgarian Jews who fought in the wars, published in 1939 and a book by Ivan Strogov published in 1944.
Born in Sofia in 1935, Arditi comes from an ancient Jewish family from Rousse. He is the nephew of Elias Canetti, Bulgaria's only Nobel Laureate who was also born in Rousse. In 1949, Arditi and his family emigrated to Israel. He is the author of the books "Memories of the Holocaust years -1940-1943" in five volumes and of "The man who outwitted Hitler - persecutor or friend of the Bulgarian Jews" focused on King Boris III./BR
