Sofia, May 31 (BTA) - Bulgaria is the sixth largest cigarette producer in the EU, according to Eurostat figures for 2016. The statistics was made public on May 31, which is marked as World No Tobacco Day.

In 2016, Bulgaria produced some 21 billion cigarettes placing right after Portugal (on fifth position with 27 billion cigarettes) and Greece (on fourth position with 31 billion). These three countries account for about 5 per cent of the EU cigarette output.

The analysis points out that smoking is the key cause of lung cancer and says that Bulgaria had over 3,400 deaths from this cancer which was some 3 per cent of all deaths. Men who died of lung cancer outnumbered nearly four times the women (2,700 against 740).

The EU leader in cigarette production in Germany with 168 billion cigarettes and 32 per cent of the entire EU output. Second is Poland with 99 billion and 19 per cent of the total output, and third is Romania with 77 billion cigarettes and 15 per cent.

In 2016, the EU saw over 270,000 lung cancer deaths, which makes this cancer the deadliest in the EU. The men among lung cancer patients were twice as many as the women (184,600 against 88,800). LY/LN/
