An interview with Mirela Kumbaro, Minister of Culture of Albania

In an interview for BTA, Albania's Minister of Culture, Mirela Kumbaro, discussed the fake-news phenomenon, which, in her opinion is serious in Albania as well as everywhere else, but it is not a threat. In Ms. Kumbaro's words, fake news is just a phenomenon, a new, virtual life in the social media, a new phenomenon for their new society and their young democracy. According to Ms. Kumbaro who's been on this position since 2013, education and culture in school is the strongest tool to manage all bad consequences of the freedom. Fighting fake news should be performed by way of affronting, disclaiming, but also by being patient, via education, and also by implementing democratic rules, giving priority to the freedom of speech, and adapting existing laws to the limits set by the European Convention of Human Rights. "Until 2013 I was a University Professor and half of my life I used to work in the field of culture. In 2013 our Prime Minister who created this government, created for the first time a ministry, totally dedicated to culture, of cultural heritage and of acting culture - thus showing that culture for us is and should be priority", Ms Kumbaro added. "Over the last 5 years we have made the biggest investments in Albania's culture ever made since the fall of dictatorship. This includes the reconstruction of the new opera theater, the construction of 4 new museums and another 3 new theater houses, plus a number of various other investments in our cultural heritage" - Albanian Minister of Culture, Mirela Kumbaro said.
