Sofia, June 27 (BTA) - A da Vinci robotic surgical system was launched at Sofia's Maychin Dom Maternity Hospital on Thursday. Bulgarian Health Minister Kiril Ananiev told journalists that the system costs 6 million leva, of which 2 million were provided by the Health Ministry, 2 million by the Medical University, and 2 million came by the Maychin Dom Hospital. Physicians of the nearby Aleksandrovska Hospital will also operate with the robot.

The surgeries performed with the system will be financed by the National Health Insurance Fund. This will be further discussed during the negotiations on the 2019 National Framework Agreement.

The first surgical procedures employing the da Vinci robot will start in a month and a half, said Maychin Dom Director Ivan Kostov. The latest-generation equipment will be used in gynecological and oncological operations. Doctors' training to handle the robot is an intricate process requiring the manufacturer's approval, Dr Kostov added. The company will certify the medical specialists who will work with the facility.

National Assembly Chair Tsveta Karayancheva stressed the need to have trained specialists to use the equipment, adding that she will act as a lobbyist for physicians.

The new system and the renovated lobby at the hospital were inaugurated in the presence of Ananiev, Bulgarian Patriarch Neophyte, Karayancheva, Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova, National Ombudsman Maya Manolova, representatives of professional organizations, hospital directors and physicians, among others.
