Sofia, August 14 (BTA) - Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov said that Kristalina Georgieva's nomination as the Bulgarian candidate for the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy gives Bulgaria a chance.

Mitov met with Georgieva on Thursday.

The Foreign Ministry quoted Mitov as saying: "Your nomination for a second term as European Commissioner and for High Representative for Foreign Affairs and  Security Policy is an exceptional opportunity for Bulgaria, which you and your team have come to deserve with your active work in the last few years."

Mitov added: "It is an honour for us to work for the cause and we will spare no effort to achieve the maximum result - this or another prestigious position in the European Commission."

Georgieva said that her expertise in sustainable development, project management and various international matters, coupled with the Bulgarian government's support, was a good stepping stone to a number of key portfolios in the next European Commission.

Discussing the extraordinary EU Foreign Affairs Council on Friday, Mitov and Georgieva concurred that it is a sign of the serious situation around the world. They stressed that for the second time in eight months the world was seeing four concurrent crises of the third level of risk, to which the Ebola epidemic in West Africa must be added.

Georgieva, who is the EU International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response Commissioner, said a systematic assessment should be made of the increase in the risks of conflicts and natural disasters. This increase has serious consequences both in humanitarian terms and in terms of European security. Crises should not be viewed in isolation, but comprehensively, said Georgieva, adding that international cooperation and unity are becoming increasingly necessary in view of the serious deterioration of the global political climate.

Mitov said that the reaction to crises and the humanitarian approach should go hand in hand with targeted support for institution building.
