Government Adopts Measures to Promote Literacy
Sofia, August 5 (BTA) - The government on Wednesday adopted
measures in the 2015-2016 plan for the implementation of the
National Strategy for Literacy Promotion.
Under the strategy, by 2020, 90 per cent of 4-year olds should
be placed in kindergartens until first grade, the portion of
15-year olds with achievements under the PISA threshold should
decrease by 30 per cent and the number of adults in training and
education should increase.
The plan envisages pubic initiatives that involve public opinion
leaders with literacy issues. An educational standard for the
acquisition of literary Bulgarian will be developed.
Fifth-graders will undergo an external reading literacy
assessment, while ninth-graders will undergo functional literacy
assessment. Under the plan, Bulgaria will participate in
international and national literacy studies.
A webpage will be set up to implement the strategy.
