Checks Establish Widespread Cheating by Cab Drivers in Northern Black Sea Resorts

Sofia, August 17 (BTA) - Widespread cheating by cab drivers in
seaside resorts near Varna was established during numerous
checks the State Agency for Metrological and Technical
Supervision conducted in a campaign that went on for more than a
month, the Agency said in a press release. Dozens of cab
drivers were fined between 200 leva and 500 leva.

The checks were conducted on cabs in the area of the Varna
Airport, the Golden Sands resort and the Sts Constantine and
Helena resort. They were prompted by a publication in the German
Bild newspaper about customers cheated by cab drivers taking
clients from the Varna Airport. The checks were ordered by
Economy Minister Bozhudar Loukraski.

Some of the checks were conducted by officials of the Agency for
Metrological and Technical Supervision as secret clients of
cabs from Varna Airport to the nearby resorts. The inspections
established two cab drivers who had tampered with the meters.
They will be charged with gross violation carrying the gravest
sanctions.

Another offence was performing cab services without the
requisite signage of the car, with a switched off meter and
prior oral agreement on the price.
