Prime Minister, Ministers of Defence and Interior Inspect Fence along Bulgarian-Turkish Border
Malko Turnovo, Southeast Bulgaria, May 22 (BTA) - The agreement signed with Turkey for the readmission of all migrants who have crossed the border illegally has ensured Bulgaria's peace of mind, Prime Minister Boyko Borissov told journalists on Sunday. He was inspecting the fence along the Bulgarian-Turkish border
with Interior Minister Roumyana Buchvarova, Defence Minister Nikolay Nenchev and Patriotic Front Floor Leader Valeri Simeonov.
Borissov said that Cabinet has allocated another 6,200,000 leva during its last meeting for the design and construction of the fence along the Bulgarian-Turkish border, because in his words, "the citizens' peace of mind is what's most important". Dozens of kilometers of a complete, uninterrupted fence have been built
so far, he went on to say.
The Prime Minister noted that the pressure on the border with Turkey is minimal, thanks to the joint efforts of the governing majority. He described the readmission agreement with Turkey as an exceptional achievement of the Government and the coalition in Parliament. "Today I am going to Turkey and I can't but thank
President Erdogan and the Turkish State for their efforts, so that there is no pressure along this fence and for signing such an agreement only with us," Borissov said.
The Prime Minister also thanked British Prime Minister David Cameron for the supplied 40 SUVs, which his country granted to Bulgaria.
"With over three billion leva more revenue collected in the budget, we are constantly buying new equipment," he said, stressing that Bulgaria is protecting the EU borders in a "Schengen manner", which is widely recognized in Europe.
The plan is to have another 10-11 km of fence constructed, said Interior Minister Buchvarova, adding that in about two months the fence's total length will reach a total of 136 km.
