Prime Minister Borissov: "Absence of Prospect for Solving Migration Crisis in EU Makes Bulgaria Seek Partnership with Turkey"

Sofia, August 24 (BTA) - Prime Minister Boyko Borissov said during Wednesday's cabinet meeting, quoted by the government information service, that the absence of a prospect for solving the migration crisis in the EU makes Bulgaria try to maintain as best as possible pragmatic and good-neighbourly relations with its neighbours.

The government's information service released a transcript of what the Prime Minister said at the cabinet meeting.

"I do not see a prospect for solving the migration crisis in Europe. I see how driven by panic, country after country opts for saving itself single-handedly and how every country finds a provision in the EU Treaty entitling it to act so. The big countries in Europe gasp for air and their peoples have started to resist in a panicked fashion," Borissov said.

"Complying with thousands and thousands of limitations Bulgaria has in the EU, every day this country spends a huge amount of resources to provide food, ensure security, conduct interviews for granting asylum status with each registered migrant. The refugee facilities are full and thought should be devoted to funding the construction of new ones, if the migratory flow increases," the Prime Minister said, adding that in this situation Bulgaria must try to maintain as best as possible pragmatic and good-neighbourly relations with its neighbours. "Serbia brought out its army, fenced the borders, leaving no exit from Bulgaria. In Greece things are not good, regretfully, so that Bulgaria has to seek partnership with Turkey," Borissov said, adding that "prevented entry in Bulgaria" in reality means migrants returned to Turkey which are more than 26,000 people.

The Prime Minister said that Interior Minister Roumyana Buchvarova is currently in Berlin to hold talks with her German counterpart. "The question is not soliciting funding or equipment. The question is that I see no one providing a solution and a total absence of solidarity," Borissov said, asking what kind of union is this then.

The Prime Minister said he is holding such talks on Friday and Saturday in Turkey and Germany.
