Sofia Regional Governor Resigns over Sale of State-owned Premium-Location Property

Sofia, September 10 (BTA) - Prime Minister Boyko Borissov accepted Friday the resignation of Sofia Regional Governor Vesselin Penev, which the Prime Minister demanded after a meeting of the two, the government's information service said on Saturday.

On Friday Prime Minister Boyko Borissov ordered the Chief Inspectorate to conduct a check, as soon as possible, of the office of the Sofia Regional Governor, concerning the recent sale of a state-owned premium-location lot in the centre of Sofia, known as "The Royal Mews". The property, of a surface area of 0.75 ha, was once used as a garage by the royal family.

The check will examine whether the relevant provisions of the State Ownership Act were complied with in the transaction, okayed by the Sofia Regional Governor.

Besides, Borissov petitioned the prosecution authority to perform an overall check of all facts, circumstances and persons, related to the transaction on the sale of the state-owned property.

The order for the check comes after on Thursday the opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party-Left Bulgaria Parliamentary Group said it will ask Prosecutor General Sotir Tsatsarov to order a check into the sale.
