Truck Traffic Across Danube Bridge at
Rousse-Giurgiu Quadrupled Since
Accession to EU

Rousse, on the Danube, February 14 (BTA) - Traffic across the Danube via the Rousse-Giurgiu bridge has quadrupled since Bulgaria and Romania joined the EU in 2007 - and continues to increase. Before the two countries joined the EU, an average of 500 trucks used the bridge each day and now as many as 1,800 and even 2,000 on busy days, cross in both direction, the local customs office told BTA.

The normal capacity of the bridge according to a World Bank analysis of 2000, is 50 trucks per hour or 1,200 trucks per day.

Car traffic is also increasing. Of a total of 943,506 vehicles which crossed into Romania last year, 646,572 were automobiles.

Last year saw some record-setting days with a as many as 4,900 outbound automobiles, which is three times the usual traffic.

Because of the increased traffic and the frequent bottlenecks on some days, the authorities started a refurbishment of an extension of the checkpoint area. It was built 20 years ago but has never been used. On February 1 it was opened for a trial run.

Drivers told BTA that crossing the bridge into Romania continues to take too long.

The customs authorities say that in order to properly deal with the situation, the Romanian side needs to take similar measures to increase the capacity of the bridge. PK/LN/
